Stratford photographer Jon Welsh has a perfect eye, and the sense of an artist. Look at his photographs and you will be reminded of some of the great British artists of the last three hundred years, not least William Blake and Turner, with splashes of Constable, Lowry and Spencer. You will also feel and see the 20th century influence of photographers such as Steiglitz and Capa. How he does it is his secret. His latest book, Have Patience - first published in 2012 - is a small masterpiece of the genre, with shots of Stratford-upon-Avon that cover all the seasons, and the town in all its moods. Let me quote from Jon's introduction:
" Being inspired by surroundings is part of the emphatic nature of being an artist. The feeling of the winter sun on your face, as you take in the scene of rising mists and muted colours offer great delight to us all. To be able to capture slices of time within this book fuels my artistic growth and need to share my viewpoint - this is my way of connecting with the world's beauty and its people...".
And that's precisely what you get in this handsome volume, with each photograph a study in time as much as anything else, with the snowy winter shots quite extraordinary in their depth, as are the studies of groups of gulls, which is a great counterpoint to the dreadful sadness of the discarded supermarket trolly on the frozen basin. An image that belongs alongside the stunning shot of a swan landing in autumn mistiness that reminds me of Sir Donald Campbell's final, and fatal, attempt at the water speed record back in the 1960s.
You see, what Jon does - somehow - is fill his pictures with historic resonances, both actual and artistic, that come shining through. Look at the snowy landscapes with gulls, and the new theatre, and you also see Blackpool of the 1930s, or Orson Wells' loving camera pans of New York's Central Park in the 1940s, or those moments when John Ford aims his camera across a Civil War river. All of them full of anticipation.
The more I look at this wonderful book the more I love it.
Jon Welsh is a photographer who will quickly become one of the best working today, for the simple reason that, like McCullin, he has huge compassion.
